Speech 3 – Demonstration – COM 181 – Toren

This speech will be your chance to demonstrate a process step by step as you describe each step. Think of it as a title starting with “How to…” and ending with what hobby, skill or useful activity that you can do. You should clearly show each step that is possible to do, select a topic that allows you to show a lot and make sure that is it easy to see and appreciate visually. Think about how best to show each step to the audience but beware the limits of time. Remember: We are watching this information happen as much as hearing it. Plan for teaching us in what we hear and see.

You can do just about anything that is safe, not terribly messy, and not prohibited by the school to bring on campus. All topics should be appropriate for being on campus, since it is for a college class. You cannot use any kind of weapon, alcohol, or anything even remotely in poor taste. You can use people as visual aids if necessary. You should use your information to create an outline. Use the basic outline below as your template.

A FEW EXAMPLE TOPICS:

change a diaper, juggling, bag groceries, fishing, build a picture frame, carve a pumpkin, play the guitar, rodeo riding….

A FEW TOPICS THAT ARE HARD TO MAKE GOOD:

anything with cards, board games, anything small. If you do sports, you have to show us something great!

BASIC DEMONSTRATION DO’s and DON’T’s
1. Explain your subject simply, clearly and completely, be the expert!
2. Practice beforehand with the objects, using your hands as in the speech
3. Visual aids should be large enough to be easily seen yet not cumbersome
4. Put things where everyone can see them
5. Keep it simple with little clean-up
6. Don’t pass anything around
7. Don’t leave out or pretend steps if you don’t have to
8. Don’t disappoint us with what we might be expecting

Prepare an outline of your demonstration speech topic with this outline form as your guide.

INTRODUCTION

A. Capture their attention: an interesting start, a question, a surprise, etc…

B. Reveal the topic: clearly stating what it is

C. Establish credibility: why are you the expert, why do you enjoy this topic

D. Preview the body: state basically what we’re about to see

BODY OF THE SPEECH

A. (the steps of your demonstration)

B. (5-10 steps, give or take)

C. (separate each step in simple clear points)

D. (perform each step as you explain it)

CONCLUSION

A. Signal the end is here: for example, ” In conclusion,” or “To sum up,”

B. End the speech clearly: give final advice, interesting summation, etc.

C. “Thank you”.

Below is an example demonstration speech outline using the topic “How to Pack a Suitcase.”

Your outline would be more elaborate.

HOW TO PACK A SUITCASE

INTRODUCTION

A. It is something we all have to do, and need to do well. For space, for time.

B. Today, I would like to explain how I pack a suitcase.

C. To me, this topic is very important. I have developed a system after traveling many times.

D. As you watch, you’ll see me demonstrate organizing items, packing clothes and showing an efficient way to plan your traveling.

BODY

A. First, lay out all your clothes and other items on your bed.

Do you need it all? How many days will you travel?

B. Step two, place your shoes and heavy items at the bottom of your bag.

C. Next, lay folded clothes on top and organized together.

D. Now, place bathroom items in zipper bags and store in outside pockets.

E. And finally, review all your plans and clothes; do you have what your need?

And don’t forget your toothbrush.

CONCLUSION

A. So now that you’ve seen just how it is best to pack a suitcase,

B. remember, taking sometime before your trip to pack right, will save you time and trouble, on your trip.
