This project is a research paper exploring the development of The Juba, The Cakewalk and Line Dance. Through readings and research answer the following questions which may HELP you develop your paper.
1. Describe The Points of New York City in 1842.
2. The Juba: Who was William Henry Lane? What is a Juba? Pattin’ Juba. In what ways are the Juba and Hambone alike? In the African and European dances we discussed two formations of dance: the circle and line. What formation was used in the Juba?
3. The Cakewalk was a fun competitive dance derived from the prize walk dances. Of course the prize was a cake, but what does the expression “that takes the cake” or when something is “not a cakewalk” mean when it is used ? What is the general formation of The Cakewalk? Oftentimes the Cakewalk is associated with Ragtime music. What is ragtime music? Who is famous for Ragtime music?
4. Moving towards the 1950’s and 1960’s there was a dance called “The Madison”. What formation was used in the “Madison”. Name one step from the “Madison” be able to show that step.
5. Describe the clothes that might have been worn during each dance or decade? Briefly describe a female hat. Briefly describe a male hat.
6. As your summary compare and contrast the Juba, Cakewalk, and Madison.
