Here’s the instructions from the professor.

All: A minimum two-page draft of the research paper is due by Friday, October 23 before 11:59 p.m. This two-page draft will be graded and forwarded back to you. At that time you will also be given credit/no credit (+/-) for the Works Cited page and Formal Outline you handed in over the last two weeks (and a percentage of the overall research paper grade). The two-page essay draft, the Works Cited page, and the Formal Outline will each be weighted at a percentage of your overall grade for the research paper project. We will subject the research paper to a series of revisions over the next few weeks, with each revision counting toward the final grade for this major research project essay. For example, the next revision will add a minimum number of pages to the project, and the following revision additional pages, and etc. Ultimately, the final drafts of your research papers will be a minimum of seven pages, with most final drafts of the research paper essays averaging between seven and ten pages. I will give you specific instruction over the next few weeks of exactly what information must be added to the essay each week. This research paper will be considered an example of your best writing and research for the semester, and as such it is weighted at a greater percentage of your semester grade than the other essays you have written this semester.

Description of the Assignment:

Due Friday, October 23, before 11:59 p.m. a minimum two-page draft of the research paper. The research paper represents a major percentage of your semester grade (again, as I’ve stated in other posts, I will not know exactly what that percentage is until the end of the semester when all revisions have been completed, and I have a final total number of assignments completed to factor into the equation).

Each revision and resulting draft will represent a percentage of the total at which the research paper is weighted. The final draft of the research paper will be due Friday, December 4 (according to the AWC academic calendar, the last day of class is Friday, December 11. This gives you literally all of the time available to complete the project, and still allows me a week to grade the research papers.

The topic of your paper is to determine through research whether The United Farm Workers Union, led by Cesar Chavez, at some point became a major civil rights movement. Therefore, your thesis statement must clearly state a claim that the Farm Workers Movement ultimately was a civil rights movement, or was not a civil rights movement according to your own opinion. You will provide evidence in the essay body paragraphs and as applicable that substantiates and ultimately proves your claim. This evidence (quoted, paraphrased, summarized, and etc.) must be cited correctly in-text or parenthetically as per MLA 8th edition rules.

This is NOT a “book report” on the life and times of Cesar Chavez. It is a research paper that sets out to prove (and successfully does so) whether the movement led by Chavez became a major civil rights movement, every bit as important as the civil rights movement led by MLK. For example, if you want to write about Cesar’s early life in the North Gila Valley near Yuma, this is only relevant within the context that somehow this early experience prepared him to become a leader of a major civil rights movement–otherwise this information is not relevant and does not belong in the research paper. Please go back and re-read the posting as necessary from the last two weeks to further reiterate and more thoroughly explain the requirements of this assignment.

For this writing project, please use the following as a check sheet in order to hand in a complete assignment:

1. Use correct, 8th edition MLA format and rules. If you need help with this, do not attempt to guess–please see the MLA Formatting and Style Guide online at the Purdue OWL website.

2. The essay must be two pages minimum for full credit, consisting of an introduction, body paragraphs, and a well-developed conclusion (considering it is only two pages at this point, of course….). For a review of any of these essay components, try a key word search at the Purdue OWL. Number the pages using Arabic numerals as per the assignment instructions….

3. Include an original title that hints at the direction of your thesis statement. Descriptive titles are the expectation for research paper projects.

4. Use Formal Register English consistently throughout.

5. Your clearly-stated thesis statement must be the last complex sentence in a single, one-paragraph introductory paragraph. Do not stray from support of your thesis, do not find yourself reverting to simply “reporting” on the life of Cesar Chavez.

6. You must use valid research sources in your essay as per the requirements posted on Canvas for your Works Cited page due two week ago.

7. Provide evidential support (factual, logical, statistical, anecdotal, etc. ) as necessary in the body paragraphs that supports your thesis statement.

8. Attach the Works Cited page assigned two weeks ago to get started with this project following the second page of this essay (unless you have more than two pages, of course). The Works Cited page is a numbered page that follows the two-page minimum research paper draft.

9. Attach the Formal Outline created last week for this project to this essay draft following the Cover/Title Page as per the instructions and discussion. Remember, when a Cover Page is used with the MLA format, the outline becomes similar to a Table of Contents and should be in chronological order with the essay. The outline page numbers should be lower case Roman numerals….

10. The Cover/Title page is not a numbered page, but it is the first page of the assignment. Please use the example posted in Canvas last week and follow this example exactly when formatting your own Cover Page.
