Papers that lack a clear source, or proper citation, will losecredit. Example 1: Wallace Thurman, “House-Rent Parties”(1938).Example 2: Ronald Reagan, Candidacy Speech(1979). 2.Identify at least ONEcategory of historical analysis. Students may draw from categories defined in this course(see list below). Alternatively, students may derive original categories of analysis, and/or use multiple categories of analysis to interpret the primary source that they have selected.In theirpapers, students must A)define the category of analysisandB) describe the significanceof this categoryanalysis in theirinterpretation of the selected primary source.Papersthat lack a clear category of analysis will lose credit. Example1:What is the importance of “gender”in Theodore Roosevelt’s speech entitled “The Strenuous Life”(1899)?Example2: Whatis the roleof the “state”in the National Security Council Report, NCS-68 (1950)? Students may draw from, but are not limited to,the following categories of historical analysis: •“Gender”•“Race”•“State”•“Citizenship”•“Culture”•“Politics3.Select at least THREE secondary sources. Secondary sources are meanttohelp supportinterpretations of primary sources. THREE fully cited secondary sourcesare required for this assignment. Students may draw from secondary sources listed in the syllabus. Alternatively, students may select secondary sources that they find through independent research. 4.Paper Proposal.Students will submit a proposal (ONE to TWO pages in length)where they will identify at leastONE primary and ONE category of analysis, and at least THREE secondary sources. In the proposal, students will alsohypothesize the relationship between the primary source(s) and categories of analysis that they have chosen. This assignment is meant to help studentsdevelop a thesis and initiate research well before the primary source analysis essay is due(see syllabus for specific due dates).
