The Charioteer of Delphi: who when and why?

Teacher’s instructions:
For this part, you are required to document:
– 8 bibliographic citations, including:
6 peer reviewed secondary sources of various types
2 website sources, one of which must be from Wikipedia
– each citation must:
identify what type of source it is (book, journal article, chapter in a collection, dissertation, website)
include a very brief explanation (1-2 lines) of why this source makes your list
▪ identify parts of the source that are directly relevant to your topic (eg. chapter titles, page numbers etc.)
▪ if only 1 or 2 pages of a source are relevant, the source is not detailed enough, so find a better one. For example, your textbook is not a good source for research.
– 3 of your best peer reviewed secondary sources must be annotated:
provide a detailed description (10-12 lines long) that explains how the content of the source is relevant to your research topic
focus on problems and controversies about your topic (where authors disagree and differ from one another in their understanding of the topic)
▪ Do NOT include: 1) simple facts about your topic,
2) the problems you had in research, or
3) what you hope to find in the source
▪ Do not simply summarize the title, abstract, or introduction to the source
o include page references to where information can be found in the source
o incorporate brief quotes relevant to the controversies you discuss
o you may wish to discuss how the author’s ideas differ from those of your other authors but keep that to a minimum. Each description should focus on the ideas of its author. Your summary (in part 3 of the project) is where you will be able to compare and contrast different ideas.

The bibliographic style I require does NOT correspond exactly to any standard manual of style (MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian etc). Different disciplines use different styles and I also require additional information that is not normally part of a bibliography:
– you must indicate where you found each source
for an article, this may be the name of a database (JSTOR)
for a book, the call number and library
for a website, the exact URL that will lead the reader to the site
