One distinction that is often made is between a descriptive and a critical review – with the emphasis on critical not meaning ‘negative’ but well-informed, reflective, thoughtful, positioning and evaluating the relevance and contribution and limitations of a book. A critical evaluation is of course also what distinguishes an ‘excellent’ book review for us, beyond a fair and accurate description of the argument.
The important central perspective I’d like you to take is: What does this book contribute to an understanding of Just Sustainability Design (JSD)? How does it shape JSD?
It would be nice if the review itself can make a contribution that allows others to understand the answer to this question without having read the book yet. So there may be a fair bit of description that you may want to do in the main part of your review to tease out what you think we can learn from this book for a Just Sustainability Design perspective. A critical evaluation of that will add to this description to turn the important argument into an excellent review.
So to summarize, an excellent book review
* accurately and fairly represents and summarizes the book’s main argument ,
* contextualizes it within our course and connects it to what we have read and discussed till then,
* positions how the book contributes to an understanding of Just Sustainability Design, and
* critically evaluates the book’s contribution,
* and does so succinctly and in well written form.
