Statistical Study

FORMAT: Write 4-5 pages (not including cover page nor any appendix) All papers should be typed and spell-checked, double-spaced, 12 point font, New Times Roman, all margins 1”. (EXCEPTION: YOUR COMPUTATIONS DON’T NEED TO BE TYPED!!!) PROJECT: • Part 1 You are going to make your own statistical study. It will involve gathering your own data set. You are going to estimate the mean of your population and write a report about your work. Step 1: Choose the population of your interest that you are going to analyze. Examples of these are: IQ scores, body temperatures, weight of apples, student heights, things produced by a machine, home runs hit in 2012, NYC winter temperatures, etc. These are examples of data that usually present a normal, approximately normal or approximately symmetric distributions. Step 2: Decide on the sample size you are going to use. Will your sample size large enough to approximate the population mean? Step 3: Collect your sample of values from some source (newspaper, book, internet, survey, etc.) Care should be exercised when collecting your data to avoid bias and other problems with results. Try to select your sample as close to simple random sample as possible. If not possible, address the issue in your report. Ultimately, the goal is to perform statistical analysis on your raw data to make an inference on the population of your population. Try to chose a data set that is interesting and worth writing about! You should have your data set ready by 11/30/20. • Part 2 MA-336 Do the computations necessary for estimating an interval estimate for the mean of your population. Compute an interval estimate using level of confidence of 95% or 99%. • Part 3 Writing your statistical report. It should contain the following. 1) Title/Cover Page 2) Introduction: Discuss the population that your data set was selected from and the parameter mean you are examining. Keep the following questions in mind when writing your introduction: What is the population you are examining? Why are you interested in this population? How and where did you obtain the sample data set? (Be sure to credit the source of the data.) Do you believe the data set you collected has any kind of bias? If so, why is the data biased? Could the bias have been avoided? 3) Provide the method used and your computations. 4) Conclusion: you summarize what you have learned about your population. What does the sample indicate about the population mean? A representative sample describes the population for us with its measures of average, variation and distribution shape. The population will have similar characteristics to well-chosen sample. Of course, if our sample is biased or not representative of the population, we can still speculate about what the population mean actually are. Address these topics in your conclusion. Would you change any decisions made while doing your project? Would you change the size of the sample or the way your collect the data? 5) Appendix: Include your original data set with source indicated (you can scan it, print it or give the link to it – I need to know which values you used!) GRADING Ÿ Content (80 points) You must address all of the questions, be thoughtful and reflective, and provide an excellent understanding of the concepts involved in each question. You must provide relevant details and correct computations You must show your computations. Ÿ Conventions of language (15 points) No errors in grammar or spelling, uses complete sentences and clear speech. Use spell checker. MA-336 Ÿ Mechanics (5 points) In the final submission, includes title/cover page, the graphs required in the project. Organization also is an important factor. Also follows the guidelines given and send an electronic version of the project to Instructor.
