· Hello Lauretta,
· for the Self Case Study, you do not use Scott as the person you are basing your self case study on. Rather you use yourself for the case study but follow the same 8 steps.
· Does that help to clarify?
· thank you,
· Nicole
·
· For the Self Case Study based on yourself, complete the chart and the summary as per the instructions of the Scott Case Study. This time, however, the case study will be based on your own life.
Follow the steps given in Scott’s case, submitting the Self Case Study Template
chart with all sections completed. For clarification, please refer to the Scott Case Study. Please include thorough detail in this assignment and ensure that your typed work is clear and concise!
If you rather not complete the Self Case Study on yourself, you may choose to use a character from a movie, series, etc. Please discuss this with your instructor prior to doing so.

tep 1- Instructions
Step 1
15 Key Factors
The first step is to listen to the video and find the main 15 factors that are influencing the way Scott is conducting himself. These factors will be used throughout the case study so it is very important to take notice.
Listen to the Scott video and write as many key factors that you think have an influence on his behaviour and outcomes as you can on a separate piece of paper. These are main points that might have been or are or will be turning points for Scott – past, present, and future [ie. Mother leaving him (past)]. Once completed, go over the factors and decide which 15 you have decided are important. Write the 15 key factors down the side of the chart then proceed to the next step.
Example:
KEY FACTORS
mom left him and his dad

dad put him in foster care

not focused in class

tep 2 Instructions-2
Domains and Stressors
1. This step involves finding out which domains most of Scott’s key factors are taking place. There are four domains:
Cognitive (thinking), Physical Social/Familial (family) Personality/Emotional, .
The word domain is similar to the words category or area; such as the cognitive category for Scott – poor school attendance. Sometimes, one factor may be under two domains e.g. the key factor may be Scott being placed into foster care and you may decide that there are two domains this factor influences: emotions (feeling rejected) as well as the familial (family) (family dynamic changes).
Place each key factor in the domain you think it belongs under key factors column. Remember that some may actually be influencing two domains dominantly. Now review the list of Key Factors and either underline or bold the ones that you, as a team, think are affecting Scott at the present time.
2. Stressors:
Secondly, though you have determined the 15 factors that are influencing Scott, not all of them are of the utmost importance (influencing Scott in the here and now). Look through the factors and highlight or underline the ones you think are a top priority. Often, one factor leads to another so if you assist in one, the other will diminish e.g. you are cranky, but you are cranky because you are hungry, so having something to eat will help you have a better mood. It would be silly for me to write a program to deal with your crankiness and let you be hungry. I will feed you and hopefully, your mood will improve.
EXAMPLE:
COGNITIVE DOMAIN
key factors (Present stressors in bold)
not focused in class
does not have parental role models right now, only from the foster home
Feelings
Unless Scott states what he is feeling, we have to use our listening skills to determine what the underlying feelings are because we will not know unless Scott confirms it. It is, therefore, necessary to use reflection of feeling/meaning by hearing the underlying feelings/ meanings attached to the key factors in Scott’s life as he speaks. You need to pay close attention to his body language, tone and words to determine his feelings.
In the next column, beside your factors you placed in the domains, is the Feeling column; beside each key factor, write a feeling(s) you think Scott could be feeling using the Feeling chart in this section to assist you. Once you have completed the worksheet, add the feelings to your case study.
EXAMPLE:
COGNITIVE DOMAIN
Feelings
KEY FACTORS
not focused in class
scattered
does not have a role model or mentor
lost
Step 4 Instruction
Coping Mechanisms
Often youth react to factors in their lives by using coping mechanisms that do not lend to healthy choices e.g. you may feel stressed about the amount of homework you need to do so go out for the evening to help feel better about your situation which leaves you not enough time to complete your work.
There is a list of coping mechanisms in the Coping Mechanisms article. Look at the list and determine which ones Scott is using to compensate. Place a coping mechanism only beside a key factor which is underlined or bolded and has a feeling listed. Not all sections will have a coping mechanism.
dad put him in foster care
betrayed scared
rationalization
Coping Mechanisms
Coping Mechanisms/Defense Mechanisms
According to the text Anna Freud was more concerned with the period of adolescence than her father and suggested that in the id-ego-superego conflict of adolescence the ego uses defense mechanisms in order to cope with this conflicts.
Defense mechanisms are involuntary reactions that have an unconscious bias but can be understood by the conscious mind, even though they cannot be reasoned out of existence. They attempt to reduce anxiety and soothe pain although they are self deceptive as they distort the ego’s perception of reality in their attempt to help the ego cope with anxiety. Defense mechanisms are emotion-focused coping methods which we all employ.
