While individuals often encounter stereotypes associated with race and gender and are thus more likely to think critically about them, many people accept age stereotypes without question. Our culture’s glorification of youthfulness is so great it fosters an ageist stereotype of the elderly that makes it difficult to see them authentically and accurately. The popular media of television, magazines, motion pictures and novels perpetuates this stereotype. This activity asks you to observe attitudes about aging as reflecting in social media.
Instructions: Create a power-point presentation that demonstrates the 2 listed types of ageist stereotypes. You are required to utilize at least two academic references. You must include a title page and a reference page.
(1.) View a television program or movie that portrays an elderly person. (Dramas, soaps, and sitcoms are good) Again note how the person is portrayed and how others treat the older adult.
* List the title and a link of the program or movie.
*Briefly identify the elderly person in the television program or movie, and describe their appearance and behavior.
*Describe any ageist stereotypes in the television program or movie.
*How did the other characters react to or treat the older adult?
*Was the older adult presented realistically or was he/she an object of pity or humor? Did the humor rely on the viewer’s familiarity with ageist stereotypes?
*List and explain how one concept from the chapter of late adulthood that applies to the program or movie.
(2.) Examine any current media platform to find a least one picture/image of an older adult. Copy and paste the picture/image.
*List the link or web address of where the image was obtained.
* Describe their appearance or dress, and what is happening in the picture/image.
* Describe any ageist stereotypes in the picture/image.
* List and explain how one concept from the chapter of late adulthood applies to the image.
Remember, this is a presentation and not a research paper that you are creating. Two of the options for creating that presentation were Prezi and PowerPoint, which will work for this project. You could also use SlideBomb, Zoho, or Google Slides which are all free online presentation software like Prezi. Feel free to use other presentation tools.
