Literary Analysis

is essay, you will write a literary analysis essay where you argue a literary aspect of the work. Your literary analysis can assume that its audience has read and discussed the story. To support your analysis, use three sources: the text of the story and two secondary sources cited in MLA format. One of the secondary sources may come from an authoritative web site, but the other source must come from a peer-reviewed (juried) print work (book, journal article, or essay).
Basic Features:
A clear arguable thesis—the thesis should be presented within a clear context in the opening paragraph. The thesis should be interpretive and avoid statements that are too obvious.
Support for the argument—the essay should correctly quote, summarize, or paraphrase passages from the story (the primary source) in order to support each point of interpretation. Interpretation is consistently based on textual evidence rather than speculation. Support should also come from 2 secondary sources that help develop your argument but do not overwhelm your analysis.
A readable plan—the essay is organized around points of analysis rather than around plot summary. In addition to the opening paragraph with its thesis and forecasting statement, there is a strong conclusion that reiterates the essay’s main points. Topic sentences set up each point of analysis in the body’s paragraphs, and each point is developed with explanation, examples/quotes, and interpretation.
Correctly cited and utilized quotations—the essay correctly utilizes the MLA format to cite supporting material from the story and two secondary sources. Quotes are smoothly and grammatically incorporated into the writer’s own ideas and words. When quotes are altered, ellipses or brackets are used clearly and correctly.
Consistently utilized conventions of literary analysis—the essay 1) uses present tense to describe the story’s action, 2) has a title that is not just the story’s title, 3) is persuasive rather than informative in tone, and 4) is structured around the writer’s ideas and uses quotes only for support of those ideas.
