Life Review Report: Social Context of Career/Identity Development

This assignment is intensively descriptive and analytical.

I. The Assignment:

The Life Review Report will be a paper of 5-5.5 pages, double-spaced, 1” margins, in Times New Roman 12-point font and in .doc or .docx file. Cover page, name, ID, term (e.g., Fall 2020), cohesive writing is required and expected with correct use of grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. The Assignment should be submitted at Blackboard where SafeAssign program is applied to check the similarity/originality rate of your writing, so please be sure to write as much an original paper as you can, and avoid copy-pasting from other people’s writing, to keep the similarity rate below 25% (if it’s within 25%, the similarity mostly reflects the citation of the theories or research). Try to keep the citation or quotation to the minimum by paraphrasing rather than direct citing or quoting. The paper will not be accepted if the similarity rate is higher than 25%). You may take advantage of the UTRGV Writing Center for any assistance before submission. Observe the due date. No late work will be accepted.

Spend 4-6 hours outside classroom, interact with an elderly person of age 65+, (preferably in their 70s or 80s or even 90s if applicable) who is related to you (e.g., your grandparent, parent, uncle, or aunt, if possible before you interview him/her by helping this person in some way such as cleaning, cooking, or mowing the lawn; if you cannot find a relative, a neighbor or a friend will be fine). Take note of the age, gender, racial/ethnic background, immigrant status, health condition, hometown, schooling, their career before retirement, their achievement, their challenges and how they coped with challenges, their contributions to community/society, social relationship, personality and report truthfully except the names. Develop your own questionnaire, with a particular theme or focus that on the social context of career/identity development using the following list of questions as a reference. Write a report, describe (1) the way of your data collection, (2) your relationship with the interviewee (how do you get to know him/her, and how you are related), (3) life stories as recalled by the interviewee (that give meaning to their life) about career and identity development and how the social context of family and friends/community made impact on the process, where she or he spent life, and (4) analyze the elderly person’s life stories about career/identity development with two theories discussed in the course such as Erikson’s, Marcia’s, Bronfenbrenner’s, and/or Phinney’s. Note whether there is any moratorium, foreclosure, diffusion or achievement in his/her career/identity development, and then (5) discuss what you have learned from this assignment. Make sure the 5 parts are included in your report.

The topic or theme will be the social context of career/identity development and you need to focus your questions on this topic.
