Language and society statement

In the first week of the course, you will be asked to prepare a paragraph (100-200 words) stating what you believe to be “the place of Language in Society”. This paragraph will serve two purposes. First, your paragraph will serve as our ‘welcome activity’ that you have posted discussion with your peers Second, your paragraph will serve as the basis for this Language and Society Statement assignment that you will hand in for grading toward the end of the course. You do not need to submit your initial paragraph for grading. Each week throughout the course, as we address a new topic, you will return to your statement and add to/modify it to reflect what you are learning. In this way, you will be continually expanding, refining, and improving your initial statement about the place of language in society. You do not need to submit for grading your weekly revisions to your statement. You only need to submit for grading your completed assignment by the due date. You are strongly encouraged to updated your statement for yourself each week so that you are not overwhelmed with the task at the end of the term. Your final statement should be approximately 1500 words (5 double-spaced pages).

My initial statement:

In my point of view, language is as significant as air and is indispensable to human life. People in different positions speak languages in different ways, because they are playing different important roles. Teachers speak kindly and attractively, Politicians speak officially and rigorously, Waiters speak warmly and enthusiastically. Teachers’ language is to teach students knowledge and truth to help them enlighten their life, Politicians’ language is used to govern, plan for development and defend their country’s rights and interests in the international community. Waiters’ language is used to satisfy customers’ needs, provide amazing experience of being served to them. In our life, we use different way to speak languages when the meet people with different emotion, we use melting language to comfort the distressing people, use patient language to influence the irritable people, use approbatory language to support upset people, these are the charm of language.
