Juveniles Who Commit Violent Crimes.

Thesis: When it comes to juveniles who commit serious crimes, each case needs to be considered individually. There are times when a juvenile rehabilitation system is appropriate, and there are other times when adult prison is the best answer.

Introduction: grab the reader’s attention by stating the topic, purpose of the paper and the thesis statement (one paragraph)

What is the topic? Define the topic. Do not assume that your reader (the instructor) knows anything about the topic.

Is the thesis statement arguable? Your thesis statement should NOT be a fact.

Ex: ‘The paper is about defunding the police.’

If the paper is about defunding the police, this statement is a fact.

This would not be a strong thesis statement. In addition, to it not being a fact, it is also too broad and doesn’t capture the reader’s attention.

Ex: ‘Defunding the police puts communities at risk.’

One could argue that this statement is not a fact.

This could be a strong thesis statement as it is arguable and concise.

Make sure that at the end of the introduction, the reader (instructor) can answer the questions “Can I define the topic?” “What is this paper about?” and “Do I have an idea about what the student’s argument about the topic will be?”

Body: This is where the student will go in depth regarding what was discussed in the introduction (3+ pages)

What are the results from the student’s research?

The student will use their research to justify the thesis statement

What are the differing positions on the topic?

The student will need to objectively explain differing positions using the evidence from the references

What are the problems, consequences, possible costs, benefits, impact, etc.?

These are topics that should be addressed if they relate to the student’s topic.

Is the body organized in a logical way that is easy to understand?

The student is encouraged to utilize the ACE Tutoring Center for assistance and/or proofreading

Are at least four different references cited in the body of the paper?

Quotes should be presented with context which relates them to the student’s argument

Conclusions: This is where the student will refer back to the thesis statement and wrap up the paper (One paragraph)

Are key points summarized?

Did the student present the closing argument, including recommendations based on the results of the research or suggestions for further research?

Bibliography: This is where you cite the references that you used throughout the paper. (Do not count this page in the required 4 full pages)

Did you use at least two professional journals?

Did you use at least two online sources?

Did you use APA or MLA form to cite references on the reference/bibliography page?

Paper will need to be turned in as a .doc or .pdf

1-inch margins on all sides

Double check for grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors before submitting

Include a reference/bibliography page with at least four references (two online sources and two professional journals) that were each cited in the paper. (this is not to be included in 4 page requirement)
