Essay #1. Read the texts/lecture on Islam carefully. Next, identify and summarize three points from your reading. These points can come from one reading (the chapter from Fr. Roch, John Paul II, lecture, the two articles linked in the lecture), or you can grab points from more than one of the readings. Identify the points and give a summary/explanation of each. After you’ve summarized three Points, Circle them back to your own experience. Why did you choose those points? Can you relate them to your own experience, to another course (reading/discussion), or anything you’ve read/hear/watched outside of class? How does the reading connect with you? The point of this exercise is for you to read the material carefully, provide a summary of what you’ve read to show your understanding of it, and express your thoughts and the connections you made. This segment should be a minimum of 2 pages.

Essay #2. Given what you read/watched and your understanding of this tradition, how would Islam approach some of the important issues of our day? Of the 5 topics listed below, choose one to “tussle” with Islam. How would a Muslim approach the issue you chose? Your reflection should be a minimum of 2 pages. Choose one of the following topics:

– Ecology/the Environment (ex. climate change, care of the Earth, etc.)
– Poverty (ex. income inequality, feeding the hungry, social service/charity, etc.)
– Pop Culture (ex. poplar music – rock, pop, rap, etc. – movies, TV shows, social media)
– Human Rights (ex. refugee crisis, torture, war, human trafficking, etc.)
– Racism (ex. interracial relationships, race relations in communities, etc.)
