Internet Data Privacy

The research paper will consist of 7-10 pages and will include 7-10 research sources on an approved topic. Sources must be documented in MLA style, which we will review extensively in class. You may also obtain a current MLA handbook or access online resources such as the Purdue Owl for information on citing specific sources.

TOPICS AND THESIS STATEMENTS: The research essay will be persuasive in nature, wherein you take a position on some social, political, or cultural issue. NO BIOGRAPHIES OR ENCYCLOPEDIA-LIKE ARTICLES.

Strategies for constructing persuasive thesis Statements:You make take a position on some controversial topic: Legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes is the right thing to do.

You may make a claim or assertion about some social, economic, or technological trend.

Internet communication has allowed us to express many facets of our personality through the development of virtual selves.

You may draw a conclusion that answers a question concerning your topic.

Men and woman have different impressions of communication based on innate brain chemistry, which is different in men and women.

You may offer a compromise or a solution to a controversial issue.

Illegal immigrants should be allowed to apply for citizenship, but only after they have proved that they are productively and honestly employed.

Avoid topics such as abortion, the death penalty and other such topics that are so well-worn that everyone already knows the pros and cons of both sides. If these topics interest you, narrow your topic to an aspect of that topic. For example, instead of writing a paper that is pro or con on abortion, perhaps you could argue whether or not abortions should be funded with Government assistance. If the death penalty interests you, perhaps you could narrow your topic to whether or not we should execute juveniles, the mentally ill, or the mentally challenged.

RESEARCH SOURCES: Research sources should be reputable and authoritative. For the most part they should come from books, scholarly journal articles, government sources and possibly newspapers and magazines.

NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

** At least FOUR of your sources must be scholarly/peer reviewed books/articles/journals. These types of sources can be accessed through Library databases. You can locate peer reviewed articles through the CSN online library by using the “peer-reviewed’/scholarly” filter options. (More to come on how to locate and set these filters).

**Beware of the internet “google” search as much of this information is unorganized and unreliable. If you do use internet sources, favor governmental sites and educational sites over commercial ones. Commercial (.com) sites typically are for advertising purposes. Favor internet addresses that end in .org, gov., or .edu.

** Any internet source you use MUST cite the Author and/or publisher of the site and that publisher must be an authoritative person or organization (No blogs, YouTube, etc). I will provide you with information on finding a website publisher and evaluating the reliability of a website.

Rough draft 1 including the works cited list (This may be a very rough draft; you need not turn in the entire 7-10 pages yet—the works cited list may also be incomplete, but you should provide at least a few solid sources.)
