In historical research it is necessary to be able to find and use both primary and secondary sources. A primary source is one that is a direct writing or artifact that provide first-hand accounts of events, practices, or conditions of the event or period being researched. A secondary source is a writing that was created later by those who did not have first-hand experience of the event, practice or condition and often uses primary sources and provides some sort of analysis of them to come to a set of conclusions.
This exercise is designed to teach you how to search for relevant primary sources and appropriate secondary sources as well as how to properly link and cite these them.
Question 1
Go to the website, Avalon Project, created by Yale Law School by following the provided link. http://avalon.law.yale.edu/.
Select from that site a primary source that is relevant to this class. Pay attention to the time period in which the document was created as well as where it was created and who it affected.
Post a proper footnote in Chicago/Turabian style citation for the chosen primary source. For guidance on how to write a proper Chicago/Turabian style citation go to http://libguides.nwmissouri.edu/turabian/home. (* It lists a footnote style citation as “Note”, usually the difference between a bibliographical and footnote (note) citation is the use of commas instead of periods)
Important: The primary source must be relavant to the topic and time frame of the class. (i.e. You could not use the Magna Carta of 1215 for a U.S. History II – 1865 to Present class because it is not a U.S. History primary source, and it does not fall into the timeline of 1865 to Present.)
Question 2
Access JSTOR from the “Library Services” located on your “myTCC” login. Your tuition pays for your access to JSTOR.
Search for and find a Journal Article that uses your primary source selected in Part 1
Important: It must be a scholarly journal article. Book reviews do not qualify as a legitimate secondary source, and do not use book chapters posted in JSTOR.
Post a proper footnote citation in Chicago/Turabian style for the Journal Article that you found that uses your primary source.
Question 3
In one or two paragraphs describe how the article you have chosen uses your primary source. Do not summarize the article itself, explain your understanding of how the author of the secondary source used the primary source in his/her scholarly writing.
1: Enter the Chicago Style footnote for the primary source.
2: Enter the Chicago style footnote for the secondary source found.
3: Enter a short summary on how the primary source is used by the secondary source.
