Write a research paper on almost any topic addressing a course-related theme in the United States or in an area of U.S. imperial influence. The paper should not merely be about one particular environmental issue but rather must examine how natural resources intersect with culture, race, gender, or class (perhaps focused on an environmental issue, but perhaps not). Your topic should be about culture and natural resources in the U.S.!

Common writing problems to avoid: Many writing problems show up repeatedly in student papers. Please take a close look at these, and after you have drafted and revised your paper, use this list to check it through again.

Write succinctly—fewer words are always better if they convey the same meaning.
Create a clear sequence of thought throughout.
Write about films, books, articles, and so on in present tense (e.g., “In this film, the narrator implies…” not “…the narrator implied…”).
Correct your spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Avoid colloquial (casual speech) terms and phrases (e.g., “This article is awesome.”).
Use the active voice when possible (not “The Native Americans were displaced by European settlers”; instead write, “European settlers displaced Native Americans”).
Be consistent in your use of tenses.
Do not use contractions (like don’t).
Remember to number your pages and provide a title, etc.
Demonstrate command of the language.
Do not use words just because they sound impressive.
Be sure you know the meanings of all the words you use.
One of the worse errors in writing occurs when the writer uses a fancy word or phrase to seek to impress but uses it incorrectly and thus conveys lack of skill or knowledge. We’re not impressed by fancy words–we’re impressed by sophisticated, organized, careful thought.
