An Internet meme is a cultural artifact of a concept or idea that spreads rapidly over the
internet, reaching a very large digital audience within a short period of time. This
assignment requires you to use the format of a meme to explore and synthesize course
concepts and theories.
EXAMPLE
Sample Meme “Maternal Health”
Analysis:
Using the medium of Star Wars, this Meme speaks to the fact that women’s health issues
are disregarded and not afforded sufficient research importance compared to men. This
is called the medical research gender gap. Women’s diseases are often missed,
misdiagnosed or under-researched due to male bias in research. In addition, the U.S. has
a marked racial disparity in maternal health. Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die
of pregnancy related causes than non-Hispanic white women, regardless of education and
socio-economic status. Not to upset my Mandalorian friends, but we have to work to
ensure that this is not the way.
