In terms of format, explainers are a mix of a research paper and academic blog posting. It should present a question or argument, provide a summary of the existing scholarly research and how it relates to your question, include some analysis (likely from your data analysis blog post) and then conclude with a clear discussion of what we (should) know about the topic and how it relates to the contemporary world. In other words, it has the same goal as a term paper, but in a more accessible presentation. Page expectations are in the 8-10 page range.
