Essay III, The Visual Analysis
Your essay should introduce the image and its creator without beginning with the words, “This image…” Instead, look at the sample essay I placed in the Canvas Files and word your introduction in similar fashion. Subsequent paragraphs should give some background, or place the image in context, by telling what was going on in the culture at the time of the creation of the image. Some paragraphs should describe the image in detail. Do not use the same sentences you used in the online assignment without editing and revising! Your description should be clear and detailed; leave nothing out.
The balance of your essay should include a clear analysis of the meaning of the image, the target audience, and your assessment of how persuasive the image is for the particular audience. You may use the terms you used to identify rhetorical stragegies when you wrote the rhetorical analysis, if they apply to the ways in which the image you chose persuades its audience.
Your conclusion should state how effective (or not) the image is at persuasion. You might mention the audience again in the conclusion, particularly if the image was created with a particular audience in mind. A political cartoon, for example, would be the cartoonist’s attempt to persuade voters.
