Have you ever wondered what makes you feel hungry? Without really knowing, I have always joked with my husband and said, “I must be hormonal because I’m starving.” Little did I know until taking this class how true that statement would be. Ghrelin is a hormone that is released by the parietal cells when the stomach is empty. We learned a little about this when we studied the endocrine system in that it works hand in hand with growth hormone. Ghrelin produces the sensation of hunger and triggers the hypothalamus to secrete growth hormone-releasing hormone, preparing the body to take advantage of the nutrients about to be absorbed (Saladin, 2018). It is often referred to as the hunger hormone for this reason. It is mainly produced and released by the stomach, but smaller amounts can also be released from the small intestine, brain and even the pancreas.

Generally speaking, ghrelin levels rise prior to eating and usually stop within an hour after eating (Saladin, 2018). The timing of this rise and fall is regulated by an individual’s normal eating routine. Levels of ghrelin increase when fasting and are lower in individuals with a higher body weight compared to lean individuals which leads us to think that it may play an important role in overall body weight regulation (Society for endocrinology, 2018). This is a great explanation as to why ‘fad diets’ often do not work unless they are a long-term lifestyle modification. Once we stop a diet, the ghrelin levels increase, thus making us more hungry and more apt to ‘fall off the wagon’.
