In this module, we were able to learn more about socialization as well as how it plays a role in our everyday lives. In fact, it plays an unbelievably large role that we don’t really realize. Socialization is the process wherein people come to understand societal Normas and expectations, to accept society’s beliefs and to be aware of societal values. In other worlds, it is pretty similar to the topic of culture however in a societal sense, this can play as the human behavior we are taught to use today.

In a society that consists of men, women and others, the behaviors of each group are pretty different from each other in a sense where it is easily identifiable. For women, society teaches us to be polite as well as handle things with grace while a man would more be raised to take things with power. So there really is a large disparity amongst the two. It is really important to conduct research using male female participants because not only does it give the experiment more variety and diversity to stable the results, but it also would help with testing what are the societal norms as well as what isn’t when raising both genders. This would help researchers identify the social norms in society as well as how to make them more inclusive to everyone.

When it comes to my agent of socialization, I have a lot to select from. I know that growing up, my parents exposed me to different types of people so at a very young age, I was very accepting of other. But the agent of socialization that has the greatest influence on my life would definitely be the media as well as the peer groups I choose to associate myself with. In the beginning when I was a child, I would mostly turn to my parents but as I grew older, my peers became the ones to teach me proper social etiquette. However since the pandemic started, I had turned to the media to mold me into the person I am in today. I knew I had a choice to either be active on the media or in real life, but I chose the internet hence the endless possibilities on there. A lot of what the media is teaching me as of right now is about politics. I was never really into politics but with it being so important this year, I am anticipating every single move. And this not only applies to politics, the internet is ubiquitous to the point where you can’t even escape it. The media really does teach moral development when I come to think about it. Not only does it give insight about the future as the present generation, but it also teaches us a little about anticipatory socialization where it is socially acceptable to be successful without the use of school.

Considering the fact that I am currently a college student, I do find myself gradually changing from the environment around me. Especially with what is happening right now, I have grown a lot compared to before. In a way, college students really do go through a form of socialization in a way where they graduate from being a child to an adult. In my case, I began college at seventeen and now that I am eighteen, I can easily say that college has matured me into a young adult in terms of fending for myself, working hard for my money and staying optimistic about my future. This would not only benefit my career as a student, but it would also give me insight of who I want my self to be. With the self being the person’s distant sense of identity as developed through social interaction, I choose the crowd I want to surround myself with. When attending college, the cultural behavior students must be able to adapt to is the fast paced life in college where everything almost feels like a rhythm. As soon as one is able to get a feel of the rhythm and understand their schedule with balancing school, then everything will be okay.

In conclusion, there is a lot to learn about socialization when it comes to how people interact with others. This module has allowed me to come to an understanding that common sense comes from socialization and socialization roots from simply behaving properly around others. We, as humans, are trained to absorb the information we observe and socialization has led us to figure the right and wrongs of life.
