In the documentary China: A Century of Revolution- The Mao Years 1949 – 1976 was interesting. The Mao Years under the Communist Party began with Mao taking power from the previous incompetent, corrupt, and oppressive regime. Chinese citizens hoped that the Communist Party would ensure unity and economic prosperity. Mao’s leadership style made various attempts to strengthen the economy and improve international relations. Mao entered into a defense treaty with the Soviet Union to strengthen his army against American forces coupled with the resist America campaigns. Mao stifled the right to free expression because he could not tolerate people with ties to the previous regime who were tortured and prosecuted. Families were disrupted under his regime because of Mao’s fear of the rising elite who were critical of his policies. The disruption of community life by having informers within the community caused distrust. Disruptive land reforms initiated by the Communist Party by encouraging socializing agriculture through cooperatives and abolishing private property led to violence. To encourage industrial output, communes comprised of peasants were to make steel. The peasant’s labor was exploited to make China’s economy competitive and to ensure it overtakes European countries and the United States of America. Mao’s ruling philosophy involved intimidating the representatives of peasants who informed him of the problems like the great famine which lasted three years. It is estimated that thirty million people died of hunger because of the retrogressive policies of the Party. Mao believed in a continuous revolution for change. China’s influence and growth grew steadily and by 1966, it was among the nuclear powers in the world. Mao’s ironic attack leading to a cultural revolution on party officials of the Communist Party was because of the perception that they inhibited a true revolution.

This week, I would like to present my views on the watching of the video “China; A Century of Revolution – The Mao Years 1949 – 1976.” In 1949, China lay destroyed or devastated by decades of civil war and invasion by others and trusted a communist regime for unity. Mao Say Tung was the leader of the communist party and he governed China until 1976, promising a strong and modern country. The communists set a network with many branches and promised that common people will be governing the country, which was not true, communist propaganda. The first major law of the communist was to make woman equal to man, which is fair. However, they also created work units which gave the government direct control of people’s lives, which the way or one of the ways the communist use to control people. Mao gave land to the workers in the farms, the peasants. Stalin, of Russia, gave the Chinese limited aid and a defense treaty. The American, MacArthur, attacked North Korea and wanted to attack China and get rid of the communists there, but the Chinese retaliated with a massive force of 250,000 Chinese soldiers. Both Koreas agreed to the 38th parallel as a division line. Inside China, the government encouraged people to act as informers. Thousands were jailed or executed by the communists, crushing all opposition. This is the Chinese’s way to enforce their control on the people; the don’t allow the common people to go to the beaches and resorts the government officials and their friend enjoy.
