The COVID-19 Pandemic has had a major impact on the operations of the sports world. From the NBA creating a bubble and many sporting events not having any fans. A big impact that has hit close to home, was the cancellation of Fall Sports in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. With this cancelation and other changes across the collegiate sports world, Texas Southern’s Athletic Department will miss out on about $3-3.5 million in revenue, based on the guaranteed contract payouts. If you are not familiar with guarantees in collegiate athletics, basically an institution will pay another institution an agreed upon amount to travel and play their institution in game. Last year alone, TSU’s Men’s Basketball team made over $1 million in guarantee games. These funds are usually used to help with the cost of travel, meals, equipment and other expenses within the department. Along with no guarantee games, the department has also missed out on revenue by not being able to host the TSU Relays in Spring 2020 and possibly in Spring 2021 or any football games this fall. These issues have caused problems even at some of the well-funded schools, causing employees within athletics to lose their jobs or furloughed for quite some time.

Your assignment, knowing the information that you know is to write a three-page analysis on how Texas Southern Athletics should operate for the 2021-2022 Academic Year. The analysis should give a detailed view of what you feel would be the best options for the department from a financial standpoint and wellness standpoint. Remember the situation with Bethune-Cookman not letting student-athletes play. They have had a number of students enter the transfer portal to leave for another institution.
