Before you begin this assignment, please read carefully the following pages from our text book:
Thinking and Writing about Poetry, Chapter 16: Reading and the Writing Process, pp. 367-377.
Thinking and Writing about Poetry, Chapter 17: The Literary Research Paper, pp. 378-397.
Choose two poems from our text book for analysis. You may choose a poem(s) that you have written about in our class discussions or for your weekly writing assignments, or you may choose new poems. For this assignment, do not write on the same poem that you explicated in the previous assignment.
You must choose two poems by the same author OR two poems on the same theme. You can search our text book index for multiple poems by the same author, and you can find a Thematic Contents listing on pp. xxix-xxxvi. Spend some time searching and reading and thinking about the topics and issues and themes that are important to you.
Once you have selected two poems, follow the guidance in our text book to create a comparison/contrast analysis. Be sure to read the example student essays that are presented. I have also posted (in the Week 12 module) a Purdue OWL video on comparison/contrast that you should view.
Sources: In addition to the primary sources (the poems you are analyzing), you must incorporate an idea from at least one secondary source and cite it properly. CC Librarian Ms. Hickey has prepared a video, posted on Canvas (Week 12), with directions for accessing our databases for articles for this assignment. You must have at least one peer-reviewed secondary source. You may use two secondary sources if you wish.
While you are to turn to secondary sources to develop your ideas, you must ultimately support your thesis with quotations from the primary sources. Your paper must NOT be a string of quotations from other sources; instead, it should be a well‑balanced combination of ideas from secondary source(s) and your own interpretations. You must design your own method of organizing what you have learned about the poems; you must present examples from the poems along with quotes and paraphrases from the secondary sources you have read.
You are expected to document references to other works (both primary and secondary sources) according to MLA style. You must document ideas and patterns of organization as well as direct quotations. Plagiarism, even a first offense, results in automatic failure of the course.
Length: A minimum of 1,000 words (it may be longer)
Format: Introduction which presents a clear thesis statement; body paragraphs that develop the thesis; conclusion
Documentation: Cite your poems using MLA style. Follow examples in the text book, especially Ch. 17.
Evaluation: Your analysis will be evaluated according to the Philosophy of Grading on our course syllabus and the rubric posted in the Week 10 module.
