Ch S 310 Latina/o Music Event
This course encourages students to explore a variety of Latina/o music recordings, performances, concerts, and experiences. Since student attendance of Mexican regional music concerts, live performances, music department recitals, and/or dances is not possible, you have the option of writing a 4-5 page written report over a music concert video, movie, biopix, or documentary.
Written Concert Report: Students prepare a 4-5 page double-spaced written report discussing the hype, price, quality, and audience participation using some of the music theory, ethnomusicology theory, and artistic concepts presented in readings, discussions, and class lectures. Even if the type of music is one that is not covered in this class, you should be able to relate it to any of the critical, music, or cultural theories and/or vocabulary covered over the semester. Students must show what they’ve read and provided a cover page illustrating the event or type of performance– a flyer, ticket stub, receipt, photograph, or program.
Concert reports should be organized into five to eight complete paragraphs in length (following standard essay form: introduction, development, and conclusion). The body of the essay should consist of four sections: 1) a detailed synopsis of the concert and its music, musicians, venue, date, the audience (age, gender, color/ethnicity/sexuality . . . ) and instruments 2) a personal reflection on the concert describing the most important points you learned about the connection between musical performance and/or dance and culture 3) your paper should quote or paraphrase from reading assignments and engage social/cultural theory related to the performance showing what you have read 4) discussion of the lyrics and/or musical sounds using music theory: meter, rhythm, scale/mode, intervals, chords, form.
