Consider a data system that classifies people into a series of categories. Into what categories does the data system classify people? Define residual categories as you consider the consequences of the classification structure for diverse groups of people. In your response, you may reflect on questions such as: Who came up with these categories, according to what politics and values? How much control do individuals have over how they get classified? What happens to individuals that do not fit into just one of the categorical boxes? How do the categories shape individuals’ identities and life paths?
