Addiction is a disease and not only does it affect you physiologically but it can affect you psychologically and emotionally as well. However, as much as the addiction has a negative impact on themselves, it has a negative impact on the family as well. When family members or loved ones cope with someone with an addiction, they tend to to experience intense and conflicting emotions. They tend to over care and start to question their loved ones which results in loss of trust with them. When they start lying and breaking promises it gets harder for the family to bestow trust in the addict. The children of the addict is also put at a risk of also being a drug addict. Studies show that 1 in 5 children grow up with a parent who abuses drugs or alcohol. If a parent battling an addiction or substance abuse problem, the effects of that disorder are more than likely going to play a role in the child’s development. This is especially serious in single-parent households where the children have no one else to turn to. In order to help the family, the whole family must go to a family therapy and get counseling. When the entire family visits the addict in treatment, they can better see how he or she is doing and provide support and encouragement. (Berman, 2020)
