DB 8: Labour and Art Today
This week’s graded component will require you to complete two tasks:
You will be asked to choose an artist who’s working today on labour related themes, share their work and discuss it.
You will need to answer a few questions on the Bernie Miller and submit them as an attachment to your DB posting.
This assignment may be completed individually or in partnership. Please use the partner finder DB thread in order to find someone to work with
Assignment Guidelines
Step one:
Choose an artist(s) at work today on labour related themes (be sure that no one else has chosen the artist, and that she has not already been discussed in detail earlier in the course). The ‘Finding Work’ clip provided on this week’s video page may be a useful place to begin. You may also review the notes you took of Elizabeth Heartney’s lecture on labour in market system art (Modulke 3).
In your posting tell us about the artist and her work. Your posting should answer some of the following questions: What is the artist’s name, and where does she work? How does her work relate to themes of labour? What sort of relationship does the artist share with art market; i.e. is he community based artist, a market system artist, does he receive government funding?
Using the hyper-link tool to be found among the text editing tools about your message window, provide a link to some of the artist’s work, and discuss the work in your posting.
Part two:
Answer the following question and include them as an attachment to you DB posting:
What is the “market failure” theory of public arts funding? Please describe in detail with reference to the reading material.
On page 139 in our reading, Miller refers a ‘creative infrastructure’; what does this term mean in the context of the reading?
Does Miller support the public funding of art? Why or why not? Please answer in detail with reference to the reading material.
Tips for the Successful completion of this Assignment
Successful postings should be: 250-500 words in length for part one; 250-500 words in length for part two. What is important here is making sure that you have explored your topic in sufficient detail. You are free to go over the limit in the case of more involved responses. Strive to create organized readable material.
Be creative and try to make your response as original as possible.
READ other postings before making your commentary; make reference to other students’ postings where you can, and respond to them to show your consideration for their contributions.
Be sure to provide original content. Student work that repeats something stated in another posting will receive lower grades; i.e. choosing Santiago Sierra will earn you lower grades.
Be considerate of other student’s ideas and be polite.
