This will take considerable time; plan ahead and work on this assignment throughout the course.

INSTRUCTIONS

You are required to purchase LiveText for this course and for completion of this program, since LiveText access is required for all classes in the program. LiveText is a one-time purchase. This is not optional. This assignment is due in Module 6: Week 6, so make sure you have purchased LiveText prior to Module 6: Week 6. This assignment is submitted in LiveText AND Blackboard.

Each heading (below) is a separate section of the template in LiveText. You must respond to each prompt within each component. All answers should be in complete sentences. The headings for the assignment are listed below:

Component #1: Developmental Considerations in Counseling

1) Consider the following case study: Larissa is a 14‐year‐old who was born in Mexico but has lived legally in the United States for the last 5 years. She asked to speak to the school counselor because she and her parents have been experiencing more conflict lately because she wants to do more with her friends, especially on weekends, and her parents want her to attend family functions with them. They say she can have her friends come to her house, but she is reluctant to invite them because her parents don’t speak much English. She says she wants to be respectful of her parents but thinks they don’t understand what it is like for her. As the counselor, what developmental and cultural factors are relevant to this case? How would you incorporate these factors into your counseling approach with this client?
2) Describe three major changes in each of these areas (self, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical, development) for early childhood, middle childhood, early adolescence, and mid‐adolescence.
3). Discuss three resiliency traits that positively impact student learning and development.

Component #2: Individual Counseling Process

1) Discuss the stages of the individual counseling process according to Vernon & Schimmel (Chapter 2) when working with hypothetical client Nancy, a 12-year-old adolescent who was recently adopted from the foster care system and is having difficulties with her new younger siblings. Also, identify community opportunities that might enhance her transition to a new home.
2) How might a counselor explain what “counseling” is to a low-ability 14-year-old boy? To a gifted 10-year-old? To a client from another culture whose first language isn’t English?
3) Discuss termination issues related to counseling children and adolescents, citing at least six strategies that can potentially help both counselor and client to end the counseling relationship appropriately.

Component #3: Ethical Considerations and Theoretical Approaches

1) What are the legal and ethical concerns when working with a 7-year-old minor who was referred for counseling by his or her teacher? When would you have to breach confidentiality and what obligations do you have to your young client with regard to privacy? When is a referral to outside resources warranted? Specifically cite applicable ASCA and AACC ethical standards.
2) What theoretical orientation(s) will you primarily use when counseling students and why? Identify how you considered culture in your theoretical orientation choices. How would you approach issues of worldview and faith in your counseling sessions with a student in a secular counseling school setting?
3) Create an “informed consent” document to use with students and attach the sample form to this component.

(Use at least one article identified in this course to support your actions with regard to addressing spirituality and other multicultural issues.)

Component #4: Multicultural Counseling and Transition Programming

1) How will you develop your awareness, knowledge, and skills regarding counseling diverse youth? When have you experienced or witnessed discrimination or oppression, and what was that like for you? How did you react and what did you learn from this experience?
2) Discuss 3 culturally appropriate interventions that have been proven effective when working with children and adolescents from diverse cultures.
3) Discuss 2 multicultural competencies in relation to student learning and development, diversity, culture, and spiritual/religious beliefs.
4) Transition programming can be an effective part of the school counseling program. Give 3 scenarios where transition programming would be beneficial for students and why.

Component #5: Counseling At-Risk Children/Adolescents

1) Define the 4-step framework for working with at-risk children and adolescents presented in Chapter 11 of the Vernon & Schimmel text, and then discuss the types of interventions you would utilize and structures you would want to have in place to work with the following problems faced by children and adolescents at risk:

a) Suicidal children and adolescents

b) Substance abuse & addiction

c) Depressive disorders in children and adolescents

o 2) Describe the difference between being a social advocate alongside a client and being an advocate for a client.

o 3) List the 12 warning signs for suicide that school counselors should consider when assessing for suicide (Vernon & Schimmel, Chapter 11). Give 3 crisis resources that are available for children and adolescents in your community.

Component #6: Writing
