Sample History Visual Essay.pptx
Your assignment is to create visual essay that explains and shows how this topic changed over time in American history between the 1600s and 1800s.
The visual essay should be created in PowerPoint, Prezi, Google slides, or some other digital presentation software program. The required elements of the visual essay are:
–a written 2-3 paragraph introduction in which you identify and describe the topic of your visual essay and explain how this topic changed over time in American history between the 1600s and 1800s. The description of the topic and your explanation of change over time should be informed by class notes and reading in American Yawp. Additionally, the introduction should tie together the visuals in the rest of your visual essay, explaining how they relate to each other in terms of showing change over time for your topic. (20 points)
–a minimum of 5 visuals arranged in a sequence that allows you to show how the topic changed over time. Visuals can be primary source images (political cartoons, photographs, and some paintings), secondary source images (paintings or illustrations of events completed after the event took place), maps, or graphs (either shown/used in class or of your design). The visuals must relate to your topic and provide visual evidence of the changes you explained in your written introduction. (10 points)
–brief (2-3 sentence) written descriptions of each image in your visual essay. Descriptions should provide important information about the creator (if a primary source); identify important details in the visual for the viewer, especially those that relate to your explanation of change over time; and identify the chronological context for the visual. Each visual must be clearly identified in terms of whether it is a primary source, secondary source, map, or graph. (10 points)
–coverage of your topic between the 1600s and 1800s. The prompt asks you to explain how a topic changed over time between the 1600s and 1800s. To do this effectively, you must include visuals that span this date range (i.e., at least one from 1600s, at least one from 1700s, and at least one from 1800s), and your introduction must explain change over time from some point in the 1600s to some point in the 1800s. (10 points)
— Use visuals discussed in class for your visual essay. All of the PowerPoints discussed in class this semester are available to you in Brightspace. Use the syllabus/class schedule to remind yourself of when your topic was discussed in class and find the PowerPoint(s) for those classes to locate relevant visuals.
–Use your Big Question Response papers!. You have likely already written something about your topic in one of the response papers. Go back through your responses to identify relevant information that you might include in the introduction and/or descriptions of each visual.
–Use American Yawp. Each chapter of American Yawp includes visuals (many of the primary sources) that you can use in your visual essay, and the American Yawp readings should inform your introductions and image descriptions.
–You do not need to do outside research. This prompt and assignment is designed so that you do not need to conduct extra research beyond reviewing and obtaining information and visuals from class notes, PowerPoints, and assigned readings. However, if you wish to find visual sources outside of what we have seen in class or if you want to obtain additional information on a given topic, you are welcome to do so. Please note that it will be your responsibility (though I am happy to provide feedback) to ensure the credibility and relevance of any information or visual sources you obtain outside of class notes, PowerPoints, and assigned readings.
