For this assignment, you will keep a journal of the environmental issues presented in the media.

Identify various environmental issues that occur locally, nationally, and globally.
Examine how the media discusses environmental issues.
Practice identifying the credibility of sources and information.

Details
In a Google Doc, entitled “Last Name_ BIO121_ Journal,” keep a journal of environmental issues presented in the media. You should be using your Miami Google account for all course activities.

Your journal should have at least 10 entries for the semester. Your entries should include a variety of media sources, including newspaper articles, blogs, documentaries, podcasts, articles, or songs. Topics should cover issues at the local, national, and global scale. All media should be from the past year.

Each journal entry should include:
Citation of your media (APA style): Use this guide to help format your citations.
Link to or copy of the original media. Screenshots are acceptable.
Summary: Write a brief (2-3 sentences) summary of the media.
What environmental issue is covered?
Is the source credible? What evidence supports your assessment (provide at least two reasons)?
What techniques (personal narratives, graphs, data, pictures) does the media use to convey information? Are they effective?
What aspects of environmental science are covered in the media (i.e., chemical cycles, evolution, community ecology, economics, policy, culture)? You may list.
Does the article present the causes, the consequences, and the trade-offs of the solution? If so, please highlight the causes, consequences, and trade-offs.
Does the media ask readers/ viewers to do anything? If so, how likely are you to do it? Why or why not?
How does this topic connect to your life?

The entries per media should be no more than 1 typed page, 12 pts font, 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman. Answers should be concise (some may be answered with one or two words).

Reflection
Twice a semester (mid-semester and final), you will write a brief (1-2 paragraph) reflection of your Media Journal. Please include the reflection in your journal document.

The reflection should include the following:
Were there any unifying themes across your journal entries? Is so, what were they?
How diverse were the topics covered in your journal?
Did the media cover the interdisciplinary aspects of the environmental issues? Why or why not?
Did you find any misinformation? How did you know it was misinformation?
Has engaging with these media change your perceptions of the environmental issues?

You will turn in your journal twice during the semester.
October 6th: Journal Check-in One: 5 journal entries, 1 reflection:
November 20th: Journal Check-in Two: 10 total journal entries, and two reflections
