You will write one coherent essay, discussing why your chosen work does or does not fit well into the popular art movement of hits era, but the various paragraphs moving your thesis forward will explain the following things about this work:
How does it react toward similar work of the prior artistic era – how is it different (or the same?)
How does this work react toward major ideas or power structures of its own time?
Keeping in mind your answers to the prior two questions, what values does the artist seem to promote? Values are concepts of what would be morally good, proper, right or beautiful.
How do the values of the artist conform or fail to conform to the dominant artistic movement of the work’s time? What makes this a work of the Neo-Classical, Romantic or Modern era?
While you will strive to answer the above questions, they must not seem to be disconnected “answers to questions” but rather parts of a whole and connected evaluation of the artwork.

The information below is a brief summary of what will make for a successful paper:
The essay must advance a single intelligent argument (thesis) with good evidence and logical observations.
Evidence in this case, would involve citations regarding the art object, and characteristics of the arts, ideas and/or power structures of its period. You must cite from at least three different sources outside of the professor’s lectures. Obviously, you can cite from more than three.
Logical observations would start with sound assumptions. Beyond this, you make connections between what you assume to be true, and data that you observe. Based on the data you draw reasonable conclusions. These conclusions would avoid logical fallacies, (see a list in Canvas Pages).
The introduction must provide a thesis that will guide the direction of your essay.
The research must be properly documented in MLA in-text citation style. Rules of documentation will be posted in Canvas Pages, and you are free to consult OWL Purdue or other writing-style websites.
Each paragraph of the essay will be important to the development of your idea, with its own topic sentence and conclusion, moving your argument forward. Even so, each paragraph will a necessary part of a whole presentation, leading to your reasons for supporting one particular thesis.
Special note: If you include an “extra” idea or a citation just because you hope to impress the professor or other special readers, very likely this should be cut out, as it may not directly serve to prove the thesis, and will be a waste of the reader’s time. Be ruthless about cutting things that do not directly work to prove your thesis. Sometimes books can afford to “take the scenic route” but an essay should be compact, with a functional reason for everything you choose to include.
The conclusion will summarize your findings and review the strongest arguments for your thesis without simply repeating the same words you have used before. As you conclude the essay, reflect on why it has become an enduring artwork. Why do we still want to take it out and look at it from time to time – keep it on display in a museum or publish it? Why isn’t it long ago forgotten, and how do you think it might still influence the arts of our present time?
Grammar, spelling, syntax and verb tense consistency: You are learning to provide a professional written presentation, such as would be put before an employer or a customer. Therefore, poor grammar, spelling and poor syntax will be penalized. Every ordinary writing error – a misspelling or grammar mistake, will lose one point. Every punctuation error will lose one half point. Syntax errors, the misplacement of words and ideas in poor or illogical order, my earn up to three points off, depending on how serious the syntax error would be. If verbs are still inconsistent in tense upon resubmission, each verb tense change will be charged four points off.
