Choose a topic from the list below and write a three to four-page, double-spaced paper in 12-point Times New Roman font following the directions and the “check list” included in this Module.
The Essay will be posted as an Assignment within the Week 10 and Week 14 Modules for easy submission. When submitting your essay be sure the document is in one of the following formats: .doc or .docx
This essay must be entirely in your own words (no quotes) and incorporate appropriate course-specific vocabulary. Consultation of sources beyond your course notebook is not necessary nor recommended (unless you wish to consult the Mary Blair image file noted below) As a result, no citations or bibliography are required in most cases.
Topic 1 (topic chosen because I am more familiar with it):
Choose and then watch two Disney feature-length cartoons and in a thorough, integrated analysis, compare and contrast these cartoons in terms of visual style and the specific influences on that style. This essay should include, but not be limited to a consideration of who was responsible for keying or styling the cartoon, the various and specific influences of this artist here (and if applicable, other artists working on the cartoon), and how this style contributed to the story and the final appearance of the cartoon. You must cite specific examples from the films themselves to support your analysis.
**The key is to choose two films that are different enough stylistically that you have plenty to dig into with your analysis. If you have questions about a pairing, ask Dr. Holian. For example: Cinderella and Bambi OR Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty or Snow White and Cinderella or 101 Dalmatians and Bambi
Topic 2 (feel free to choose this topic if it’s easier for you)
Choose two feature-length cartoons for which Mary Blair provided significant inspirational artwork, for example Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, or Peter Pan. Watch these two movies and then in a thorough essay identify where and analyze how her sketches and paintings were interpreted on screen.
This analysis must go beyond what is discussed in course lectures and should be your own ideas, although they may be based on course material. Your analysis also needs to be specific. For example, you must cite specific scenes from the two cartoons in your discussion and refer to specific works of art by Blair. Although NOT required, you may wish to include images of these concept works for clarity. If so, these should be at the back of the paper and not counted in the page count although these pages should be numbered. See Dr. Holian for how to handle the captions for these.
It might be helpful to look at the images of some of her work in the Analytical Essay Module that contains this assignment. Remember, however, that the same rules apply to these images as any other image in the course—they cannot be posted to social media or downloaded for any other purpose than to accompany this assignment.
Three to four pages in length with one-inch margins on all sides (including on the first text page)
12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced
Page numbers on all pages except the title page. You may choose to put your last name before each page number, (i.e. Holian 2) but no other information should be included with the page number.
Add a title page. This does not count towards the page count for the paper and should not contain a page number. This page should include at least your name, date of draft, which draft this is, which topic you chose (*1* or 2)
Free of ALL spelling (spellcheck is not enough, read carefully and out loud) and mechanical errors including punctuation and grammar. Colons and semicolons are used incorrectly by 98.5% of all students who use them. If you don’t know how to use them correctly then avoid them. They are not necessary, and when used incorrectly will hurt a student’s grade.
Eliminate random capitalization of words.
All movie titles should be underlined OR italicized. Choose one and remain consistent throughout the paper. Please note that for longer film titles like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs you should shorten the title in subsequent uses to Snow White. Remember to underline it or it will be unclear whether you mean the title or the character.
All character names should be capitalized.
If you use a number like seven, it should be written out. Ten and below are written out. Beginning with 11 use the number.
Do not use quotes. The paper should be entirely in your own words. The plagiarism tool TurnitIn will be used to scan drafts.
When referencing an artist, use their last name only in secondary references.
If you included images, make sure they are properly cited and that you have read and followed the “How to write with images” guide in this Module.
