Topic ( The Big Bang Theory)
To summarize, your finished Scholarly Conversation should include: ( I’d like to apologize in advance for this)
1. An opening statement that introduces and explains your chosen subject/topic, including some mention of why this subject/topic appeals to you.
An explanation of your subject’s/topic’s past-and-present scholarly conversation.
A summary of the minimum sources you located (what is called a literature review).
A declaration and a thorough explanation (citing, for example, your original contribution, the
meaningful stakes, any consequences, and such) of your proposed main claim.
A formal Works Cited or Bibliography (NOT annotated!).
Project #2 in English 112 explores the scholarly conversation surrounding a topic of your interest and curiosity. A scholarly conversation, according to Ritzenberg and Mendelsohn in How Scholars Write, is explained in the following way:
When scholars write, they participate in a scholarly conversation – reading other scholars, responding to them, and expecting other scholars to write in response. New research takes on significance when it demonstrates how it advances this ongoing conversation (15).
Your challenge in Project #2 is to first consider your own curiosity about your chosen subject/topic and generate a main claim that allows you to “make an original contribution to the conversation.” To do this, you will begin by locating the minimum number of sources as listed at the top of the first page and write a summary of about 100 – 200 words for each (you’ll be locating/summarizing seven source items in all). A formal Works Cited (for MLA) or Bibliography (for APA) must be added to the end of your project so as to document all the materials you found. Note: this will NOT be an annotated Works Cited/Bibliography.
You must then compile an essay of roughly 700 – 900 words analyzing the overall nature of the scholarly conversation in question. This essay will provide a brief history of what’s already been discovered about your topic and how your intended scholarly contribution to the conversation will add “meaningful stakes or consequences” that will “influence others’ interpretations” regarding the subject you have selected.
