Toulman Mapping Assignment

Toulman Mapping Assignment Instruction Please keep average and simple. I don’t want paper over complicated.

Select a controversy and develop at least 4-8 arguments advancing both sides in the controversy. If there is one side you are more in favor of, you can produce as many arguments as you can to support that position. Your paper should label the three parts of your argument (data/warrant/claim). In some cases, it may be the case that you only can identify a warrant and claim. You should have clear claims and your premises should draw from your claims.

Although the quality of your arguments is important in the big picture, for this assignment, you will be evaluated on the amount of arguments you produce. Yep, quantity counts for more than quality here.

Format: Please use the following two arguments as models to format your assignment. These are two hypothetical arguments, laid out for you to understand the format. The basic elements of the format are as follows:

1) Clearly indicate the position the arguments are supporting.

2) Clearly label the argument, data, warrant, and claim for each argument you produce.

3) Supply an argument that summarizes the position of your data, warrant, and claim. You will find it helpful to work through your data, warrant, and claim before writing out the full argument.

Sample Arguments:

Position: In favor of William acting.

Argument 1: Because preparation gives applicants more control over their interview settings, William needs to prepare for his upcoming job interview.

Data: William does not do a good job in his job interviews.

Warrant: Preparation for a job interview gives the applicant more control over the interview setting.

Claim: William needs to be prepare for his job interviews.

Argument 2: Since communication courses give students important communication skills, William should take communication courses to become more comfortable with face to face communication.

Data: William is uncomfortable with face to face communication

Warrant: Communication courses give students the skills to communicate in a range of settings.

Claim: William needs to take some communication courses.

Contemporary Controversies:

Controversy One: The Reluctant Student Anthony is married with two small children. Last year, his job of 20 years was outsourced overseas. His severance package included money to return to college, but there is a catch. Anthony hates school. Anthony’s wife, Brianna, wants him to go to school and get a higher-paying job, but Anthony would rather stay home and take care of the kids, one of whom has Aspergers Syndrome (Autisim). Anthony’s wife Brianna has not contributed to the family’s finances. Anthony has been responsible for both the bills and child care. She has recently been offered a job that pays the exact same as Anthony’s Severance Package. In addition, the salary prospects in this field would be about the same as Anthony’s prospects once he completes the degree. Brianna argues that she should not take the job. Her position is that she has taken care of their children and does a good job at that. Anthony agrees, but he does not want to return to college because he feels like he would be neglecting his children. Anthony’s final two years of coursework would be very difficult and would force him to be away from his children for long periods of time. Argue for Anthony’s position/Argue for Brianna’s position.

Controversy Two: Insufficient Funds Carla is a first-generation college student. She wants to attend law school. She has scored well on the LSAT and was offered a fantastic scholarship that will pay for half of her tuition. Carla does not have anywhere near the money needed to fund the other half of three years of law school (over $150,000). Carla has asked her parents to cosign a loan for her for the other half, but her parents refuse. They say they will not because they do not want to be on the hook if Carla defaults on the loan. In addition, they feel that on principle it is time for Carla to start earning some money and want Carla to work and save up some funds to pay for her own law school. But, the scholarship is only available for this year. If she does not use it, it will not be available after she saves up her money. Carla is confident that she will pay off the law-school debt once she graduates and wants her parents to have her back. She feels that it is critical for her family to support her at this point and she is committed to supporting her parents in return (if they support him). Argue Carla’s position/Argue Carla’s parents’ position (feel free to change Carla to Carl if it helps you develop arguments).

Controversy Three: Tough State of Mind Nathan is a high school junior who has been admitted to two colleges (one in state and one out of state). Nathan wants to go to the out of state college because he feels it would be best for his personal and intellectual development. The out of state offers all of the classes that he is interested in taking. He told his mother that he has his heart set on an out of state college, but his mom became very upset and said she was afraid she would not be able to see Nathan enough. Nathan’s mom is encouraging Nathan to consider his in-state choice, even though it does not offer the courses that he wants to take. His mom has stated that she will give Nathan the same amount of support regardless of which school he attends. This support is enough for Nathan if he chooses the in-state college, but only half of what he needs to attend the out of state school. Take Nathan’s side or his mother’
