Essay Instructions:

Your paper will have to include some description of details and events, but description is never the sole end of an historical essay. Your paper must develop an argument, usually one that explains why something did or did not take place, or took place the way it did, why something turned out be very important etc.. The sources you employ will provide the evidence supporting your argument.

A good way to write a paper is to develop a thesis in the first paragraph and then, in the following paragraphs, to explain how your argument fits into the context of scholarly debate on your topic. However, don’t ever lose sight of your own argument and the thesis it is meant to demonstrate.

You should rely on five sources, books or articles, and at least one of these should be a primary source.

Use proper footnotes or endnotes to document all of your sources. You must do this anytime you refer to a source, not just when you quote it. “Writing University Papers” on the course Moodle page tells you how to do this. Or you may consult the Chicago Style Manual.
