Choose one novel/novella from the list below:

Novel Choices:

Bless Me Ultima by Rudolpho Anaya, Daisy Miller by Henry James, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, or Color Purple by Alice Walker.

Discuss each element thoroughly in a separate single paragraph. Do not number the paragraphs; write this as a paper. Each paragraph must be at least 125 words (and no more than 200 words) long. Turn the paper in on Blackboard. Paper length: 1000-1200 words

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM: USE IN-TEXT CITATIONS (MLA STYLE) FOR QUOTATIONS FROM THE NOVEL. (PAGE NUMBER ONLY GOES IN PARENTHESES AFTER THE QUOTATION AND BEFORE THE PERIOD FOR SENTENCE.) USE QUOTATION MARKS EVEN IF YOU ONLY BORROW 3-4 WORDS.

The ACC library website has the MLA forms and information:

http://library.austincc.edu/help/MLA

CONSULT A HANDBOOK IF YOU USE A SOURCE OTHER THAN THE NOVEL TO SEE HOW TO DOCUMENT.YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE SECONDARY SOURCES ON THIS PAPER. IT IS BEST NOT TO USE OUTSIDE SOURCES SINCE IT IS EASY TO MAKE MISTAKES IN DOCUMENTING THEM. IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE THEM, YOU MUST CORRECTLY DOCUMENT ALL BORROWED INFORMATION (BOTH DIRECT QUOTATIONS, using quotation marks even if the quotations are only 3-4 words long, AND PARAPHRASES). CONSULT A HANDBOOK FOR CORRECT DOCUMENTATION (MLA STYLE). IF YOU READ ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE NOVEL, YOU NEED TO LIST THAT SOURCE ON A WORKS CITED PAGE AND CORRECTLY GIVE CREDIT FOR ANY BORROWED INFORMATION WITH IN-TEXT CITATIONS. MLA forms have recently changed, so use the library website or a new handbook.

1. Briefly summarize the main events of the novel. State the main/central idea implied by the author. Word the idea itself as a complete statement/sentence that can stand alone, that does not refer to any characters, and that can be applied to situations in life.

2. Discuss the personality of the main character, supporting your discussion with brief examples.

3. State the main conflict of the novel, including its two specific opposing forces, and indicate whether the conflict is internal or external. Indicate which force gets the upper hand. You may also discuss any other conflicts developed in the novel.

4. Label the point of view of the novel. If any minds are entered, state the name of each character whose mind is entered and quote an example for each. (You do not need to give examples for more than two characters.) Discuss how the point of view affects the novel.

5. Do one of the following (a or b):

a. Discuss the setting of the novel, including the time and place (geography) and any other features of setting that are important. Give specific details.

b. From the following list, choose at least three different kinds of language devices to discuss: symbol, simile, metaphor, irony, allusion, and dialect. For each one chosen, give direction quotations from the story as examples.

6. What is the tone of the novel? Discuss how one or more of the elements support the tone. Remember that tone reflects the author’s attitude, not that of the character.

(which ever of the novel stories works for me, I will let the writer choose).
