Purpose: To practice finding a multimedia source; to explain how the source influences your interpretation of the text, understanding of how the author’s personal background and creativity shaped its creation, or awareness of how stories reflect the culture and values of the time and place they are created or set.
Assignment: For extra credit (up to +20 points), find a multimedia source that helps you understand any author or short story from Modules 1-6. Options for sources include video, audio, images, animations, and more. You should avoid text-only sources and any sources that are already included within the Content modules. You should not use a multimedia source that provides a plot summary or other general overview of the story (such as resources from Shmoop, CourseHero, Study.com, and eNotes.com). Please note that you do not have to create the source. Instead, you will find a source on the internet or elsewhere. Some ideas:
Video or audio clip of the author, such as from an interview, presentation, or speech
Video or audio clip of the story, such as from a dramatic reading
An image or illustration of the story, such as a scene or character
An adaptation of the story into film, animation, graphic novel, play, dance, or other format
Requirements and Submission: Submit a document to the Extra Credit dropbox that includes:
A link to the multimedia source and/or directions for accessing it.
The name of the person or organization that created it, if known.
A brief description of the source (1-2 sentences).
A brief explanation of why you chose it (1-3 sentences). Why is it interesting? What does it help you understand about the author, story, cultural context, or fiction in general?

This video is part of a lecture series called “An Evening with Junot Díaz: Literature, Diaspora, and Immigration.” Junot Díaz reads from his work and answers questions from the audience.
In this part of the video, Díaz talks about his background as a Dominican-American raised in New Jersey and how it affects his writing. This helps me understand the setting and themes of his story “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie.”
