NURS-6370: Foundational Skills for Nurse Educators in Academic and Healthcare Environments

Organizational Alignment

According to Harper (2018), strategic planning is a process similar to the nursing process, with defined and specific steps to be taken to ensure that a comprehensive and thorough process occurs. Planning is often done to manage continuous changes in organizations. A crucial responsibility of the nursing professional development (NPD) leader is to guide the development of a department plan that supports the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals (Smith & Johnson, 2018). Also, the NPD practitioner must identify and develop resources to help meet organizational needs. The purpose of this discussion is to describe and explain the goal of the strategic plan that applies to the role of the NPD Practitioner.

A goal for the above strategic plan is to support excellence in clinical and operational performance within the community. Staff must become aware of the needs of the community to advance personal and community health beyond a traditional acute care focus. Additionally, it is the expectation for the NPD practitioner to assess the financial value or resource utilization impact of professional development activities (Dickerson, 2017). For example, the NPD practitioner may revise the community assistance program plan. The NPD practitioner would then reveal the findings such as medication education and diabetes management. The responsibility of the NPD practitioner is to communicate how such practices align with the organization’s goal. According to Harper & Maloney (2016), the NPD practitioner establishes a plan that prescribes strategies, alternatives, and resources to achieve outcomes

Conclusion

Strategic planning is a process similar to the nursing process, with defined and specific steps to be taken to ensure that a comprehensive and thorough process occurs (Harper, 2018). The NPD practitioner must implement planning that is cohesive with organizational goals

For the past ten years I have worked for the same health care organization. A small, community based, inner-city hospital that has been in place serving its community for over seventy-five years. It is truly my belief that this organization stands apart from the others in the community because of its investment in the community and the culture it exudes to its team members. Our Mission: Helping people throughout life’s journey. Our Goal: To be the trusted partner for improving the quality of life in the communities we serve. As an organization, we strive to achieve both the Mission and Goals by stressing the fundamentals Values of ownership, integrity, compassion, excellence, and services in all individuals who join our team. In terms of strategy and strategic planning as it relates to the Professional Development Practitioner this can be a great opportunity to ignite and spark change. According to Eckel and Trower (2019) when developing strategic plans and implementation it is best to determine who are the key audiences and how are their needs and aspirations changing? (Eckel & Trower, 2019). In order to provide excellent service and to be THE trusted partner in health care, our organization has developed a plane to “encourage” nurses to pursue their BSN and/or earn certification in their specialty. The bachelor’s degree in nursing is not only proof of extended study but also a gateway to further higher education in the form of a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a doctoral degree (Porter-Thomas, 2020).

By doing this, it highlights our facility in a way that allows our nursing staff to shine. As a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner (NPD), I could assist with this process in various ways. The NPD practitioners have a formal role in the organization with responsibilities for staffing, budgeting, and daily operations to meet learning and professional development needs that achieve desired outcomes (Johnson & Smith). The NPD can work with nursing staff as a credible resource to offer clarity and encourage these efforts of furthering their education. Furthering your education is a requirement for career growth, and nearly always leads to higher salaries and greater responsibility in the workplace. The NPD can also focus the conversation with staff to get their concerns and determine what needs should be addressed in which order in efforts to implement the best strategy as possible that benefits the organization and supports its mission and goals.

Discussion: Align Educational Activities to Strategic Plans
Are you familiar with the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the organization where you work or plan to work? If not, you need to be! Hospitals, other healthcare organizations, and academic institutions, regardless of their for-profit or nonprofit status, function like businesses. As such, their leadership spends a significant amount of time developing strategic plans as a way to establish priorities and provide direction in terms of how the organization will focus its efforts and resources. As a future nurse educator in either setting, your success is dependent on ensuring that your actions are aligned to organizational goals.

Based on the mission, vision, and strategic plan you identified, consider the goals that apply to the NPD Practitioner or the Academic Nurse Educator.
