My inclinations so far have been towards Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT is flexible and allows practitioners to include techniques from other approaches. Cognitive behavioral therapy empowers clients to choose their own goals and participate in selecting treatment methods that fit with their needs (Connolly-Gibbons et al., 2003). This aligns with the ACA (2014) Code of Ethics. I feel like this theory allows a counselor to implement a culturally and value sensitive approach while staying within the bounds of evidence-based practice.

I believe it is necessary to learn more than one approach. One approach is not going to meet every client’s needs. I am considering practicing in a small, rural area so I may be working with a wide range of populations.

I think that learning the additional approach of solutions focused therapy could be beneficial. Not only from the standpoint of limitations from insurance companies and managed care, but also due to SFT’s focus on the present and using strengths to solve problems. Neither CBT nor SFT focus heavily on exploring the past to find solutions. Both are strengths-based. Questioning is a technique commonly employed in CBT, using the “miracle question” would fit in nicely to focus the CBT on (and reinforce) the exceptions while targeting schemas and automatic thoughts.

Theoretical Orientation Scale
Attached you will find the Theoretical Orientation Scale. As you’ll read in the scale’s description, this tool is strictly for your own personal exploration and may be helpful as you try to narrow down which theories most closely align with your views as a counselor-in-training. Don’t be surprised if your orientation evolves as you gain more clinical knowledge and experience.

After you complete the scale, discuss what you find out here for participation. The results are usually interesting and insightful!

Question 3:

In order for me to avoid becoming “stuck” in a specific theoretical framework, it will be important for me push myself out of my comfort zone and explore other counseling theories throughout my career. According to Murdock, “different theories naturally lead to different ways of doing counseling”, meaning that following certain theories can shape counselors into who they are professionally (Murdock, 2017, p. 545). In order to continue professional growth throughout my counseling career, The ACA Code of Ethics states that I should be “open to new procedures and remain informed regarding best practices for working with diverse populations” (ACA, 2014, p. 9). By keeping an open mind throughout my counseling career, I can make sure that I am learning different theoretical frameworks and applying them to a wide variety of clients. It would be useful for me to attend counseling seminars and keeping in touch with other people in the counseling profession. Now that I understand counseling theory, I would like to understand why there are certain trends in the field of counseling. For example, I want to figure out why there has been such success in the application of cognitive theory to clients with depression (Young et al., 2014).
