Before I could even discuss the levels of evidence in research, I had to do a lot of research just to understand what the levels of evidence are. Not sure I understand this completely yet, but I’m working on it. The levels of evidence provide guidance about the types of research and rank the sources and by levels in a pyramid style. The highest-level ranks quantitative research and a lower level may be a more descriptive study. A higher level more accurately represents the situation and is more reliable data. A systematic review, the highest on the pyramid, collects data from multiple studies that ask the same research question. This method of reviewing data is essential to using evidence for decision making (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). In trying to determine the level of evidence for the article I selected in unit one, I had some difficulty. My article did not list the publication type, it just said article for document type and I did not find any other key words to help me make the determination but since it looks at a select number of patients with 4 variables, I am considering it low on the level of evidence as a case study.
A nurse investigating a topic is more likely to select from a peer-reviewed scholarly article because the data has been reviewed for accuracy before it can be published. An article from Google or other random website is not reviewed for accuracy and the study, data, or evidence may not be accurate.
Reflecting on this week’s activities and assigned readings, I feel that the article I selected is a primary source because the study looks at its own research on the patients selected for the study. I like this article for use of research because it addresses the question I have about HCC, but since I was unable to determine if it is peer reviewed, I would have to say it’s probably not the best choice for research.

1. Discuss the importance of the levels of evidence in research and state the level of evidence for the article you selected in unit 1.

Levels of evidence in research (outlined as I-VII) are important so that when researching a given topic, not only to ensure that you are acquiring a reliable piece of information as a resource from which to site but this way of classification also lends itself to allow the researcher to obtain different levels of informative research in order to have a clearer picture of their thesis, concept, and point of view.

I believe that my article identifies with Level I (evidence from a systematic review) through various qualitative studies (approximately 19 worldwide) that analyzed night-shift workers against their day-shift counterparts, new nurses versus experienced ones, and how staffing ratios affected their dietary choices (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).

2. Explain why a nurse investigating a topic may choose to search for a peer-reviewed scholarly article in a database versus an Internet source such as Google search or a random website.

Our text compares trying to find the right information from the right resource or resources to the proverbial “needle in a haystack” and it’s true! By foregoing well known sites like PubMed or Science Direct and simply conducting a Google search, you run the risk of information that isn’t foundationally sound, factually correct, or not entirely relevant to your chosen topic or keywords. It not only wastes precious time but allows sites like Wikipedia (which anyone can make) to continually pop up after a search simply because they are still being visited by the millions on a daily basis.

3. Reflect on this week’s activities and assigned readings and explain whether the article you selected in unit 1:
a) is a primary or secondary source?

b) is a good choice for the use of research? Consider the article’s level of evidence, whether it is peer-reviewed and scholarly. Support your response by citing and referencing either the course lesson or assigned textbook.

According to our text, not only is acquiring sufficient but relevant data a concern we face with all of the technology imposing on our day to days lives making computer literacy a necessity now along with our plethora of nursing skills and knowledge but by definition is a source that, “provides direct evidence in order to answer a clinical question” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019, pg. 759). The article I selected in week 1 is able to achieve this task by utilizing quantitative data from a variety of resources to prove a collective point in regard to night-shift workers and their subsequent level of nutrition and nutritional choices.
