Instruction: Respond to a classmate who was assigned a different article than you by further supporting his or her critique or respectfully offering a differing perspective.

Student’s Response:

The research question asked within the research logically extends itself to the purpose of the study. Indeed, Powell et al. (2013) are curious whether “how many other WorkCover claims with diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder will arise with the context of child-abuse investigations?” Also, the purpose of the study attempts to explore the pervasiveness of workplace stressors encountered by interviewers of child sexual assault victims.

Research Question Addresses the Problem

Powell et al. (2013) describe the turmoil associated with working with sexually abused young people. The traumatization incurred by both the victim is transferred vicariously to the interviewers who work within these unique workplaces. Indeed, the authors understood that there might be other members of similar institutions that work with traumatized youth who are or have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder.

Furthermore, the research moves forward by measuring variables that coincide with circumstances within the field. More specifically, the data analysis gathered from anonymous online surveys from individuals working within these unique workplace settings is critical. The online survey results justified the research question Powell et al. were attempting to answer (2013).

Research Question Aligns with the Design of Study

Powell et al.’s (2013) work contains the three essential characteristics a good research plan must include: “consistency between the components of the research, a logical trail of evidence, and transparency in reporting” (Newman and Covrig, 2013). Indeed, throughout Powell et al.’s (2013) research, the authors methodologically adhere to their qualitative research design that allows for the environment to provide measurements that are consistent with the participant’s perspectives.

Research Question and Data Collection Alignment

The authors of the study wanted to understand the stressors associated with working within an environment that transmits post-traumatic stress disorder components onto the employee.

The research question also aligned with the author’s methods.

Powell et al.’s (2013) method included almost 70 participants, both male and female, who specialized in the area of a child abuse investigation. Out of all the participants, over 40 of the professionals were police officers “working within specialized child abuse units. Moreover, over 20 of the study participants were child protection workers.

Thus, the authors were successful in aligning their research question with the data collection strategy adhered to within their study.

Qualitative Approach:

The study was exploratory and subjective. The research remained grounded in the “qualitative framework unconstrained by predetermined analytical categories and meaning ascribed to workplace stress (Minichiello et al., 1995; Powell et al., 2013).

Indeed, Powell et al. (2013) added two distinctive components to their study, which included: 1) a heterogeneous sample (comprising police officers, social workers, and psychologists) and 2) the induction of participants perceptions anonymously using online tools as opposed to an in-person workplace environment.

Conceptual Framework Alignment

Powell et al.’s (2013) focus of the research rests on the notion that stressors within the workplace regarding child sexual assault victims, vicariously affects the workers within that environment. The author’s conceptual framework aligns with the Job Demands Resource Model (JDR-M). The JDR-M suggests that employees are subjected to job-specific elements characterized as either work assets or job requirements (Powell et al., 2013; pg., 521).

Thus, Powell et al.’s (2013) research question attempts to gauge the workplace stressors associated with working within environments that have the potential to affect individual morale vicariously. Likewise, the purpose of the study reinforces the research question by attempting to “identify the nature and prevalence of workplace stressor faced by interviewers of child sexual assault victims” (Powell et al., 2013). Finally, the qualitative research design lends itself to the idiosyncratic nature of human emotions and subtleties, as opposed to quantitative research analysis.
